It CAN BE expensive and a lot of work. What kind of a pool?

As in, how big and is it in ground or above?

As for chemicals - my suggestion. Find a local pool store that does water testing and buy SOME of your chemicals there. If they're testing you for free and telling you what to do, you should reward them with some business, IMO.

But otherwise, check prices closely. "Alkalinity Plus" is essentially just baking soda, and you can get big 15 pound bags of that CHEAP from Wal-Mart online. Ditto for a lot of the other chemicals. Cyanuric acid and PH increaser are 3 to 4 times as much per pound at a Bioguard dealer than they are from an online pool supply place or perhaps WalMart again. WalMart is a surprisingly good source for your pool chemicals.
