The false binary that drives American politics is a big part of the problem


More specifically our society's insistence on boiling things down to an "either/or" decision limited to two very narrowly defined choices. And a situation like this magnifies the shortcomings of this arrangement.

Let's ignore the severity of this new disease in the hopes that it goes away. No wait... let's shut everything down to the greatest possible extent in the hopes that we can contain it.

I'll admit that I don't know what the correct approach is, but I am certain that it exists somewhere between the middle of those two extremes. Unfortunately there hasn't been any obvious effort to try anything else at this point.

Sorry for the rant. Triggered by Brother Nuke's "both sides suck" conclusion -- which I wholeheartedly agree with.
