You're right, it really isn't the demand, it's the speculation.


People can join these clubs/services for about $50/month. The clubs compile Sales & Order information from across the Internet, and provide their members with tips. When an item is identified as the "next big thing", it can sell-out in 15 minutes (for an example, see some of the Wahl head clippers).

Just to play Devil's Advocate --- while there's no reason for people to hoard something as silly as a video game, there's also no reason for people to buy that video game for 300-400% list price. And yet, people do.
