The dominoes had started to fall prior to Hampton's decision

Remember the SWAC has never participated in the NCAA DI Football Playoffs because its regular season ends Thanksgiving Weekend which is the same weekend as the start of the Playoffs. FAMU (MEAC) won the first NCAA DI Playoffs in 1978. However, the MEAC withdrew for a period of time and had its champion play the SWAC champion in the Heritage Bowl. The MEAC decided to compete again for the title, but left 1-2 years ago for competitive reasons. Now the MEAC champion and SWAC champion play each other in the Celebration Bowl (aka Heritage Bowl 2.0). The only way the MEAC and SWAC are represented in the DI Playoffs is if an at-large team is selected by the Committee.
