I saw an interview with Mel Brooks where he talked about that.


The interview was lengthy and he’s one of my favorite artists so most would find it boring, but, when asked about Jewish comedy, he said the Holocaust was a massive driver. It always amazes me how great comedy is most often born from tragedy and depression. I suppose it’s a natural defense mechanism.

His father died when he was 2 so he had a lot on his plate. Guy used comedy to cope. I get it on a much, much smaller scale.
