I did them for a few years....

My best two pieces of advice.

1.) Swimming in a pool alone or even sharing a lane is NOT the same as open water in a lake or ocean. You will get kicked, pulled, grabbed, etc... at the start of the race. Better to start back and work up if you are not a strong and fast swimmer at the start. Let the monkeys up front do what they will and zip past them on the bike or in the run.

My first Sprint I got pulled under several times at the start. It was a lake and I had no directional visibility in the murky water. I had trained exclusively in a pool. I finished in the bottom quarter in the swim because of it but top 20 on the bike and top 10 in the run out of over 200 racers. I was and am a strong swimmer. It's just the open water thing is killer and once you lose momentum it is a killer. I had to revert to breast stroke just to get a good sight line and lost several minutes because of this.

2.) Get a good road bike. This is where you will make or lose the most time. You can lose 5 or 10 minutes easy in a sprint if you aren't on a fast bike even putting out the same effort or more of someone on a better bike. Effort does not equal good performance on the bike. Remember this and invest in a good bike if you want to compete at a high level.
