I wish! The whole sad story... night photography was the thing I think

I was most looking forward to on this trip. Of course I wanted to see the canyon from the bottom but I have done a bunch of whitewater rafting. I did a lot of reading to prep and I rented a 16mm f1.4 lens for my Sony A5100. It's not a full frame but I love the APS-C sensor and changeable lenses in a body not much bigger than a lot of point and shoots. It's a great active outdoor/vacation camera.

We slept in cots under the stars and dozed off as the Milky Way was coming out. On several nights I woke up in the middle of the night and what I saw blew my mind. It truly was like looking at a full sky, long exposure photo. Even to the naked eye the Milky Way had incredible detail and discernible colors. I fiddled with ISO, exposure and focus (hint.. don't just set it to infinity) and took a bunch of shots. I wanted to limit exposures to 15 seconds but took some as long as 30 at lower ISOs. I did this a couple of nights. Out of 100 or so images there were shooting stars on a good handful. Several times I could see shooting stars out of the corner of my eye as I fiddled with the camera.

I showed the images to the guys I was with and other people on our boats and got a bunch of email addresses of people that wanted copies. On about day four I took a photo in the Canyon and got an error message... something about need to rebuild the image database. uh oh, I'm worried. OK, go ahead. It wanted to do it again. OK. CRAP, now I'm really worried. Long story short, I think the image files, or the pointers in the database, are all scrambled. Of the several hundred (Canyon and sky) I shot I was only able to recover a couple of shots and they looked like they had been merged... top half of one image and the bottom of another. with junk in between. Worse, someplace between me and a buddy that wanted a crack at it the SD card has disappeared. Oh well, I have the memories.
