Why I am not a wildlife photographer.

While almost nobody has ever wondered why I'm not, still it's compelling to explain.

We noticed hummingbirds around our patio for the first time this summer (only our 2nd summer in the new digs), so I bought and hung a feeder for them. They've been visiting pretty regularly since the feeder went up, and we've ID'd three distinct birds.

Yesterday, I mounted my GoPro on the feeder pole about 14"-16" from the feeder. GoPro has a pretty wide angle camera lens, but because it has no shutter speed control, you're a the mercy of the time-lapse setting. If you set that at greater than 2 second intervals, you're never going to get more than a single shot from a visit. The birds only hang around the feeder for 10 seconds or so and then zoom off. GoPro also doesn't stop wing motion.

I ran four different sessions for a total of about 45 minutes of live time and was rewarded with 11 images of birds in over 1300 pix. Two images in one visit and nine in the other (and eight of those were of the hummer's back).

I use editing software that severely reduces the time it takes to review all those and cull the rejects. Still, it's a chore. I can stand outside a building for a couple of hours waiting for the sun to get right, but the way I shot the hummingbirds yesterday ain't the way to do it. I'll have to make some kind of duck blind on the patio and sit out there with my full-service Nikon to get real nature images. Probably ain't gonna happen.

Carry on, and thank you for asking.
