The Case of the Shrinking Safeguard Soap.

In my house, we use Safeguard soap, and lately, I've grown disgruntled with the fact that the bars always seem to be small. Open a new bar, within a few days, it's small. (That actually used to be an advertising campaign for them, back in the 70s and 80s.)

I complained to my wife, and she agreed, so she did a little detective work at the grocery store (Wal-mart). She discovered that Safeguard bars are 3.2 ounces, and the other major brands she checked are 4.0 ounces.

Last night, we were out at my dad's lake house, which gets shut down during the winters (so we're just now opening it up), and we brought home a bar of Safeguard soap from there. That bar from last summer is ... wait for it.... 4 ounces.

The boxes on the new 3.2 ounce bars are ever so slightly smaller than the box on that 4 ounce bar. The difference is almost imperceptible. The bar, however, is 20% smaller.

We're done buying Safeguard. If everyone else reduces the size of their bars, we'll have to reconsider, but for now, Safeguard is out. It's possible that Safeguard still makes a 4-ounce bar, and Wally World, for some reason, is carrying the 3.2 ounce bar. I don't know. I don't care.
