Not exactly on topic, but I've got to say I was completely engrossed
while watching GOT last night. A very fast passing 90 minutes or so.
But I also find myself agreeing with a whole lot of the criticisms on the board today, and had similar thoughts last night.
1) Too dark. OK, tactically it made sense for the Night King to attack at night since presumably the dead don't has much need to see. However, I can't shake the feeling that at least part of the reason for having it be a night scene was "Lower CGI Costs".
2) Tactical Stupidity. Having your cavalry do a blind charge like that. Again, can't help but think "Lower CGI costs" again here. Theon charging the NK instead of waiting. Yeah, he would have died anyway, but charging was the height of dumb.
3) WInterfell. Winterfell is supposed to be THE CASTLE of Westeros. The highest and thickest walls. It was too easy to overcome the walls. Oops, one correction - except for Storms End.
4) Not enough characters dying. Yeah, I certainly didn't WANT more to die, but in a battle with a what, 98% fatality rate and you only lose 20% or so of your named characters, yes, too "Hollywood". I think some HAD to live, even if it's a 'deus ex machina' decision, just for some good future scenes and confrontations. I think Brienne, Sam, Tormund, Gray Worm and Pod or Gendry were all expendable there unless they're saving the up for the Hollywood ending, with Brienne marrying Jaime or Tormund and Gray Worm finding love, etc.
What I think would have been cool. The dead have a tougher time breaching Winterfell, but they eventually do. Lots of battles in the courtyard, etc.but the good guys win. THEN the Night King shows up, raises the dead, and all of a sudden the good guys are fighting inside the castle again as the NK goes off to find Bran.
