Women's Golf and Commonwealth Clash
It looks like the conclusion of the current tournament at Clemson is going to be terminated due to weather. The ladies were having a solid day at -4 with 2 players in the clubhouse and the other 3 with 15 holes completed. What had been a two stroke lead over UVa had grown to a 10 stroke lead with most of UVa's players having only finished 9 holes. Ten strokes is a huge margin at this point in the tournament. This will make two consecutive tournaments that we finished ahead of the Hoos even though they are ranked #17 and we are #48. Two weeks ago we beat them by 5 strokes. With the ACC Championships starting in 9 days, we now have a legitimate chance of beating the Hoos and gaining an important Commonwealth Clash point that nobody would have thought possible earlier in the season. In this latest tournament, our #1 player, Emily Mahar, was going to finish fifth (out of 5) on the team. That means that the rest of the team played well and there is still room for improvement if Mahar is at the top of her game. Interestingly, we were 3 ahead of #5 FSU when play stopped but behind two teams that were ranked in the 50s. We were also 14 strokes behind Clemson.
We have no shot at winning the ACCs, just an improving shot of besting the Hoos. There are 5 ACC teams in the Top 25 with #3 Duke, #10 WF, and #20 Miami joining #5 FSU and #17 UVa. We are also ranked behind #29 UNC, #34 Clemson, #42 Louisville and #47 NC State. We are ranked ahead of #74 ND and #137 BC. Syracuse, Pitt and GT don't field teams.
