Day 3......................................................................
FINALLY!!!! The sky’s cleared, the peaks were all visible, and I was able to see Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in the lower 48. Wow, seeing all this glorious, monster snow packed peaks on both sides of the valley, made this trip worth while.
So, we headed up Whitney Portal Road, and there she was, Mt. Whitney! Although I could not summit, 22 miles round trip with 6000’ of elevation gain, I was able to hike 4.2 miles at the road closed sign to the Mt. Whitney trailhead. We had the road all to ourselves and due to a pretty good foot path, we did not need snow shoes. Great day on the mountain. I still have the goal to summit, but that will need to be done in late summer down the road.
