Several in my neighborhood are pushing for a Municipal Internet in

Christiansburg.
I was wondering if anyone has experience with this?
I'm all for more options and faster/cheaper high speed internet, but I'm extremely skeptical of this as an option.
1. I would imagine it would cost quite a bit which, most likely would be passed on to the citizens.
2. And thats just to build it.....upkeep would not be cheap.
3.what about when current technology becomes slow and outdated?
4. From what little I've read, it seems like many times these municipal isp's get bought up by bigger companies. So the town pays for everything to build, only to be bought up and back to square one.
5. I hardly think Christiansburg is stuggling to bring in business due to internet.
6. Locals like to complain about financial blunders such as an expensive Aquatic Center and the cluster#### of the old Blacksburg High building.....but we want them to build and manage our internet?

What am I missing here?
