That article doesn't do the benefits justice, IMHO. It could say more.

It touches on things you can visibly see only, like the dark circles, clearer skin, etc. It doesn't mention the things you can't perceive readily, like resting heart rate, blood pressure and sleep patterns, all of which affect little things like stroke and heart attack risk.

If anybody really wants to test it, go out and get yourself a wearable device, like a FitBit, that measures heart rate and sleep patterns (via your heart rate) and a blood pressure cuff. Track you BP daily, the tracker will keep up with the others, and write down when you drink and about how much - doesn't need to be exact, just a general idea. You'll see the correlation. Ideally, you start that exercise when you are drinking, then do your 30 days off.

One thing you have to realize is, it does take a couple weeks for the BP and HR to start coming down, so doing it sporadically won't show much, but if you lay off the sauce for about 30 days, you'll be amazed.

I've quit drinking, primarily because I drank too much, but I didn't think it really made me feel bad until I had quit for a while. After a few weeks, you realize you did feel bad, you just don't realize it.

In the process of quitting, I'd get to feeling better, and go back at it for a few days, until giving it up completely. I can go back and show anybody when I did drink simply by showing a graph of my resting HR on my app.

My resting heart rate went from the 80 range to about 62-63, BP dropped 20 points on each, and I am more rested with less sleep (alcohol disrupts sleep patterns, despite the misconception people have that it makes you sleep better). Never mind the weight loss, better diet (you don't eat as much bar food crap) and probably being a little less irritable that you'll naturally get.

Just my FWIW.
