What is digging up my yard?

First time up in the yard since the big snow, and there are DOZENS of these holes around. They're all about an inch and a half in diameter, and 4 or 5 inches deep. The seem to terminate (I.e. not part of a tunnel system or link to something underground). They go in at a slight angle and have a pile of mud heading out in the direction opposite of the angle the hole goes in. Any ideas?
