Only because they play a round robin conference schedule
FWIW the Sun Belt and SWAC also play a round robin conference schedule and hold a CCG. The Sun Belt and SWAC also divide up their members into 2 divisions too. If a conference is going to divide up into 2 divisions, then I have no problem requiring each team to play a round robin division schedule. Otherwise, what is the purpose of having divisions?
Now if a conference does not want divisions and it has more than 12 members, then I am not sure what should be done. The conference may not be able to play a round robin schedule if it has 14 members unless 1 of the members is Hawai'i and Hawai'i gets to play 13 home games each year. If teams don't play a round robin schedule, then I am not sure there is any "fair" way to pick the 2 "best" teams. I don't think the 2 "best teams" should be based on whatever poll because any poll could be influenced by politics.
