Should I update to iOS 12?

I've got a 6s about four years old that I've never updated the OS for due to fear that at some point the hardware wouldn't work with the OS updates anymore. But I can't download apps anymore because they all need a more recent OS, and in general things are starting to get a little glitchy. Do I update and risk losing everything (and how valid a concern is that?) or just limp along?
