IOS12 is supposed to make older devices run better. I have a X so I can't


vouch for that but the tests I've seen seem to back it up. If you're really worried just save a backup in iTunes and you can always restore. The odds of you losing "everything" are pretty slim though. iOS12 is supposed to work back to the 5s so it's not like you're doing something unsupported or not recommended.
