Yeah, I've been aware of gas station POS skimmers for years.
I always look for them when I purchase fuel. However, the card number that was stolen has never been used at a gas station. I only use it for dining purchases. I have a separate card I use for filling up with fuel, because it gets me 5% off all fuel purchases.
So, either the card was skimmed at a restaurant where I've used it, or skimmed by a proximity scanner like several other people have mentioned. The police are involved now; I called them and reported the fraudulent activity, since I know exactly when and where it took place. I have a feeling it won't be too difficult for them to track down the person that tried to use my account number. Who knows if that's the person that initially stole my number
