Had a similar experience driving home from VT on a Friday afternoon...
...when I was a student. My engine just completely shut off on Route 8, and I was stuck on the side of the road with a couple of other students who were catching a ride home with me. Thankfully another student I knew saw us on the side of the road, and stopped to help. She gave me a ride back to a garage that I had passed about a mile up the road. The gentleman who owned the shop had one of the guys who worked there drive back and tow my car to his shop (with a tow strap). A quick diagnosis revealed a broken timing belt. Thankfully I had a "non-interference" engine, so there was no other damage. He called the local parts store who was closing, but they stayed open long enough to wait for one of his guys to pick up the timing belt. They did the install and had me on my way around 7pm that evening, which was at least an hour past their closing time. I couldn't thank them enough for all of the imposition I put them through.
There are some really great people in this world, and you never know when you'll encounter them along your journey through life. Hopefully you'll be one of those people when the time comes...
