One of my early mentors was

a retired Navy officer. Told lots of stories (yeah not uncommon) he said he was on board during a sea trial of a carrier - been a while so not latest and greatest - but he said they ended up doing as tight of figure 8's as they could - at speed - always thought that would be a sight.

He also talked about hearing captains line up their ships over the radio for "drag" races.

This goes back to pre-Vietnam era. A lot less questions to answer back then. Course it could have been all old sailor's lies too.
