Even if a donor ponied up the funds to get it going, that would not be


enough. The real cost is the year to year operating costs and related overhead. Once you get a sport in place, cutting or eliminating it can have negative effects on the athletic dept and the school. And, the addition of a women’s sport would be required to balance out the Title IX issues. The additional women’s sport would also incur significant operating and overhead costs.

If VT had a large athletic endowment that would cover the additional ongoing costs it might work. But at this point there are financial issues that preclude the addition of other sports.
