The sac bunt is a negative run expectancy move at every level of baseball


The only time it makes any sense with an atrocious hitter (e.g. mlb pitcher) at the plate. It gets a little closer to being sensible with it late in the game (like you said), but you're asking your cleanup hitter to drop down the bunt. He's had one sacrifice this year, and he had zero last year. How often does he actually bunt? No surprise at all that he didn't get it down (especially on our turf).

Fragale does strike out quite a bit, but he hardly ever hits into DPs (6 in 600 ABs at VT).
