The Hokie Way’s “Stone-by-Stone” fundraising campaign ended recently, and donors supported the campaign well beyond its original goal of raising $500,000 via $250k in donations and a $250k matching gift.

The Hokie Way Director of Operations Matthew Sams reported to Tech Sideline Thursday in an email that donations to the campaign totaled $473,623.83. With $250,000 of those funds matched by a generous donor, $723,623.83 was raised in support of Virginia Tech NIL and the Hokie Way’s local charitable partners.

The “Stone-by-Stone” campaign ran from Tuesday, November 28, through Sunday, December 31, 2023. The Hokie Way reported in an email to donors and supporters on Monday, January 1, that over $427,000 had been raised, but Sams told Tech Sideline, “After I sent the mass email out on Monday, about $47,000 more came via checks that arrived in Tuesday’s mail.” Hence the final total of over $473k.

The Hokie Way challenged Tech Sideline to raise $75,000 for the campaign and provided Tech Sideline with a coded donation form that attributed donations via the TSL web site to Tech Sideline. Here are the final numbers rounded up to the nearest dollar:

  • Total drive: 769 donations, $473,624
  • Tech Sideline portion: 513 donations, $109,908

So, donors via Tech Sideline comprised 513 of the 769 donations and approximately $110k of the $473k raised.

The Hokie Way’s previous campaign, “Countdown to Kickoff,” brought in $515,495 when it ran in August and September of 2023. That means that in the last five months, The Hokie Way has raised almost $1.24 million from Virginia Tech donors and matching gifts.

  1. Thanks, Will. It’s been a long road – but TSL is a huge part of what makes the Hokie Nation so great. Of course, having reat subscribers help.
