Try applying the parking brake, and shifting the car into 1st gear and starting it in 1st without pressing the accelerator. If the car does not shut off, then the car is stuck in 3rd gear all the time that it's in "P" or "D," probably due to a failed overdrive.

If that is the case, consult your repair manual for how to turn the overdrive off or disable it. Could be as simple as unplugging a cable (though on a 2003, I doubt it). If it's the overdrive that failed, you can also just shift it into 1st and 2nd as needed (such as when you're speeding up/slowing down) and leave it in D when you're rolling down the highway. Obviously that's a hassle, but could be good enough to get you around for a while, and drive into repair ship if you need it fixed.
