and me personally I don't factor in cost when considering whether capital punishment is appropriate form of punishment or not.

I don't disagree that people who truly believe that are fools. The few who I have talked to seem to justify their belief by saying the criminal in jail/prison are there to be reminded and think about what crimes they committed to deserve to be in there. Not work out, play basketball, or participate in any "fun" or "entertaining" activities. All the ones I have talked to over the years also noted that most criminals seem to come out of jail/prison stronger and buffer than when they went in (assuming they could be released). Another thing I noticed is majority seem to think that the current jail/prison system just teaches them to become "career criminals" and that few (if any) can truly be rehabilitated and be productive once returning to society. I did notice that the more "foolish" people thought that all criminals should either be executed or never released from jail/prison.

I do think it is a bit of a stretch to jump to that conclusion, it did give me pause to think that the current system or the way rehabilitated criminals are reintroduced back into society may be broken at some level. What is unclear is whether the current system can be fixed or is time to explore other options and see if there is a better one out there. It is even possible that the solution could have influence on how people view the capital punishment issue.
