I visited Dachau at about age 12. It scarred me forever - in a good way...

We couldn't finish the tour because I couldn't take it. I later met and was befriended by someone who survived a camp (not sure which at this point) at age 5. It was good for me to know, even if a bit too early, the true horror and nature of the evil that happened there. I grew up in Germany, I speak the language, I know the idioms and the customs. They are not "other" to me, despite my being an American. Both countries are home to me. I know, and indeed have known since those early days that it's not "It cannot happen there" but "There, but for the Grace of God go we."
