They needed to book "Main Cabin" for you instead

Delta added a new lower tier last year called basic economy which indeed has no perks whatsoever, no seat selection, no upgrade list, nothing. Main cabin is still economy class - same seats in fact, but you can still pick your seat and get on the upgrade list.
