That's pretty much it. You nailed it.
I'm leaning toward Gunnevera right now. McCraken does indeed love Churchill. IWC and Always Dreaming...I need to decide.
Again all of that said, there is NO clear front-runner. I may change my mind after I read what my sister, "The Annoyed Handicapper," has to say.
One interesting factoid that gets overlooked (the nature of factoids) is that the Kentucky Derby fields in this modern era are FAR stronger than the fields from the last early glory years (Beginning -1980's). Back then, pretty much any horse could run. In fact, sometimes the fields would vary between 5-23 horses, depending on the quality of the top of the field. The stronger the top, the fewer owners willing to let their claimer run. Now, a horse must EARN a place in the field through graded stakes earnings. There are no ducks running.
So a lot of people lament the "weakness" of the fields in the modern era. That's an incorrect interpretation. Today, the fields are more competitive from top to bottom, thus making it an almost impossible race to handicap.
