Driver's Education has been failing that area for years...
I've been subject to all kinds of traffic since growing up SWVA. Since graduation, I've been in the central MD area and have seen it all from the bay bridge, both beltways, a previous commute from Crofton, MD to Kensington, MD, and more recently, more visits to VA via I-95 south.
But for all of that, no area is full of "left lane lucys" like 95 south of the capitol beltway. It is insane. It is like the rules of lanes are completely opposite. The right lane is where to be. Never do I see so many cars (not trucks which sometimes I understand) sit in the left and middle lane minding their own 1-3 miles over the limit business. Its so beyond any other interstate I've seen in these two states.
I've had to chalk it up to failed driver education. Because growing up I only had 2 lanes I was ever around with an interstate and if you were in the left, you better have a really good reason or get the hell back over. Even if there wasn't any cars waiting behind you! Its the only reason I can feel that such a percentage of drivers in that area are so clueless to the fact.
My main office is in Culpeper and some days when I need to be there, I leave Crofton, MD by 5:30 and I'm there in under 2 hours. Man though, seeing the northbound 95 below the beltway so backed up so early always has me in fine form to handle whatever Alexandria does to me going home in the afternoon.
Wow...rant over...didn't know I had that in me.
