Whenever the major book and record reps would come to town, invariably BS&T would have them take us to The Cuckoo's Nest because it was the closest thing to what the reps might be used to. One evening two guys from Random House were there. RH reps were all spit-shined and three piece suits and GQ and cultured and when we sat down and ordered drinks, Richard Walters asked them if either of them shot heroin. On another night an independent book publisher rep tipped the piano player guy $100. In a day when $25 would easily cover a dinner for two, our bills for 4-5 people would be $200. Mostly alcohol.
