Went 4 days last June (with 2 kids), rented car for 2 days


Our rough itinerary

Day 1: Exploratorium, later walked around Fisherman's Wharf

Day 2: Alcatraz (tickets in advance), explored more Fisherman's Wharf; Cable Car; hiked up Lombard St; picked up rental car

Day 3: Drove to Monterey (2 hours); went on Whale Watch; then Aquarium

Day 4: Drove to Muir Woods (get there when it opens); then hiked Mt. Tam; then went to Agate Beach to explore tide pools

Had a great time! Read up on GG tolls if you're going north of city.
Best restaurant by far: Hog Island Oyster Company
