I highly recommend reading Van Halen Rising
A truly great book on the early days of VH. Immigrants to the US, classic piano students(both Alex and Ed) as little boys, and as teenagers playing huge backyard parties in Pasenda where 1000 people would show up to see this Svengali guitar player blow everyone away at 16.
The things I love most about the story is that Ed and Alex never had a plan B, and they had to fight tooth and nail to get a record deal, when the world wanted bands that sounded like the Clash or Sex Pistols.
It's a great book and a great American success story.
