I realized in high school that

A "full ride" to Columbia would cost me more than paying out of pocket for VT. Not that anyone offered me a full ride to Columbia or anything like that. But I figured that was a handy little piece of info.

If he's in the Hillcrest program there at VT, he will get the best of big-fish-little-pond while also enjoying the diversity that a very large public school offers. It is really a unique environment.

He'll also probably get a lot of merit Schollies. But again, full ride isn't always cheapest.

There's a ton of scholarships out there. It can be well worth the time to research. I recommend trying whatever the FL equivalent of SCHEV is first. Then the school office of financial aid. Then the college at the school, then the department. huge National scholarship contests are cute, but it's tough to get one of ten grants that hundreds of thousands of kids apply for. It's a numbers game.

Congrats to you and your son. Sounds like he's going to be ok.
