Funny you should mention that


When my youngest was waiting to be born, my S.O. and I were unsuccessfully going through potential names. It seems that every name we sort of liked had a vivid, negative memory of students we taught that we would rather forget.

Plumb out of names, we went to the dart board. Sort of. We decided to look at a map of the UK in search of town names that sounded like a person's name and were struck by Callan, a town in County Kilkenny in Ireland. It sounded earthy, smart-like a fine, aged Midleton Very Rare whiskey (1987). Plus, we'd never taught a student named "Callan."
