Great picture. Father-in-law served on Canberra, though I believe

the one in this battle was Australian. According to wikipedia, "USS Canberra is the only USN warship named for a foreign warship or a foreign capital city."

He survived 2 kamikaze and 3 torpedo attacks. He graduated in 1945 out of the naval academy after only 3 years because of the war. Pretty amazing to get that kind of action in such a short period of time. He shared some incredible stories. One was when they were trying to shake a torpedo. He was listening to the ship's radio as the prediction became his compartment, which was below the water line, and that the torpedo "can't miss, can't miss!" He said the ship turned enough for the "fish" to miss but it had to have scraped the paint.

As a junior officer he pulled some bad duties, including supervising clean-ups after kamikaze attacks. When you add in the recent great depression, it's shocking what these young men endured.

I attended his funeral at Annapolis eight years ago. I was extremely impressed by the navy's service. Really miss that guy.
