In the long-run I do think VT will be able to raise more money under
this plan. I do wonder how many steps back VT will take under this new plan before it starts moving forward. I do agree that this season could impact donations levels. However, I am not sure how much because I think it ultimately comes down the dollars and the individuals priorities. Even if VT went undefeated and won the national championship this season, people would still have to decide every year how they want to use their money (especially discretionary money).
Do I use the extra money to get better seats for VT football vs. donate to the academic side vs. save up for a family vacation vs. down payment on house/car vs. put more away for retirement vs. establish/put more towards my children's college fund vs. anything else person can think of in their life? Before people didn't associate extra money with better seats. Now they do, so that could have an impact on their priorities. Who knows it may even make them question whether they want to see VT compete athletically with the P5 schools or whether universities should be in the business of big time athletics (aka minor league sports).
