I can't claim to be 'best buddies' with him, but I did radio for a few yrs
And hung out with some players in pickup basketball games. On the one road trip I went on with the team (metro tourney), Mike sat with me on the bus for some time, and we also chatted at Volleyball games when he was there watching and cheering on Liz.
He always impressed me too. Smart and very hardworking.
I'm not sure if his position as a successful DII coach would give him the visibility, and he's pushing 50 now I'm sure, so sadly that's not in his favor, but I'd love to see him get a shot.
His roommate? I forget who he lived with, but I remember at the pickup basketball games that a left handed starting picture was there a lot as welland Mike didn't really like it when I screened him for that guy to get open and score on him.
Oh, and I followed his minor league career a bit (as well as other Hokies). I was very surprised that he didn't make it out of A ball (maybe AA), given his talent level and work ethic. I guess that shows just how hard baseball is though. Even funnier when I saw that one team had moved him to pitcher because he had a good knuckleball. I do remember him pitching at VT on a couple of occasions in blowouts. [Post edited by Late 80s Hokie at 04/07/2016 12:23PM]
