That's why Johnson College outside Knoxville became Johnson U.

I recall the administration saying a college was perceived internationally as an inferior educational institution. They wanted foreign students at Johnson, so they changed the name, just as you said, OX, for marketing. Virginia Tech probably suffers some from such bias. By is popular name it is very easy to forget or not discover that VT is a university, and even an excellent one.
