AIP has changed the game

Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) is a technology that's been made practical relatively recently. All the new diesel boats are built with it, and the older boats are getting retrofitted with it. It boosts how long the diesel boats can stay underwater. This, plus the fact that generally they are quieter than nuke boats (because of the cooling pumps on nuke boats). That's all partly why diesel subs have become relevant again all of a sudden.
