One thing you need to consider the whole of Season 6 thus far

with exception of the Enid and Morgan flashback episodes, has taken place over the course of less than 48 hours.

They went to the quarry to explain the plan and while they were there, the truck fell and the walkers were loose, so the plan immediately went into effect. While the quarry group was leading the herd away from Alexandria, the Wolves attacked. That night was the night Deanna got bit because one of the Wolves died under a porch and was allowed to turn. That same night was when Darryl was camping with those people who led him to the fuel truck and Abraham and Sasha slept in the law office with a walker locked in the next room.

The next morning Glenn crawls out from under his dumpster and he finds Enid and they work their way back to Alexandria about the same time the burning building falls over and breeches the wall. This is also around the time Darryl shows up at the law office in the fuel truck and meets up with Sasha and Abraham.

Anyway, all Hell breaks loose in Alexandria and last night we saw how that all wrapped up. The point is, the whole season has taken place over something like 38-44 hours. There really wasn't much of an opportunity to extensively thin the herd, cuz not enough time elapsed to work on that. There were more pressing issues as long as the wall was holding.
