I think you understand what he means. If you don't, there's no hope.

Guns were invented to fire a projectile to kill stuff. Just because people have found other uses for them doesn't change what they were designed to do. To argue otherwise is like arguing that because you huff paint to get high, that paint wasn't just designed to cover something in color.

The idea that stoves and ladders should be treated the same way as guns and cars is ridiculous. First of all, the statistics lawhokie cited ignore that stoves, for one, are present in basically all homes, restaurants, etc. and used daily, sometimes for hours at a time. I don't think it's a big leap to assume that the ratio of amount of time stoves, furnaces, etc. are used divided by the amount of time they cause death is vastly larger than a similar ratio for guns. As for ladders, my neighbor's negligent use of a ladder is extremely unlikely to put my safety at risk, especially relative to my neighbor's negligent use of a gun.

It seems like a pretty simple concept that not all objects are created equal and our laws should reflect that some objects are more dangerous than others.

I should point out that I own a gun and a car am glad I have the right to do so. I am also glad that the law requires me and those around me to exercise a greater standard of care to own those objects than it does to own a ladder or a stove.
