Not to get overly political, but given the unfortunate mass shooting history at VT, sponsoring a rifle team on campus would not play well nationally. I realize the school has a strong and respected cadet presence, plus you could make sound arguments that guns in the right hands can protect innocent people, but still, VT would take a beating in the press given the 2007 tragedy. No smart university president is going to invite that criticism, whether warranted or not.
