My guess is that $40k will come in at well less than minimum wage if you factor in all of the labor he put into it.

Nevertheless, he may very well have been able to do just as well with an NIL deal combined with all of the perks of being a grad student-athlete - plus the opportunity to develop his physique on someone else’s dime.
