I’ve seen an aerial photo of Cologne circa 1945

Everything is bombed to rubble with the exception of the Dom (cathedral). My German hosts pointed at this as a miracle but I believe the allied bombers used it as a guide/ground marker so they purposely avoided it.

Obviously nothing strategic about bombing a cathedral but is amazing given that bombing was not always so precise.
