Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were known since at least 2000BC


Using the term "known" somewhat loosely. You can see them with the naked eye and it's pretty obvious they aren't stars since they are a different color and they move around a lot.

People have been looking at the sky and trying to understand it since the dawn of civilization.

It took the invention of the telescope to find anything beyond Jupiter, or comets, or any of the other planet's moons.
