Are you familiar with the area? For a typical game, everything on the
other side of the street from the stadium is open and free. But if there is an event at John Paul Jones Arena, they often have a time when you need to vacate the lots. The garage at Emmett St and Ivy Rd used to be free, but has since become a pay garage.
The best I can say is to check virginiasports.com before you go for the latest -- they are good about updating when there are parking limitations (and having 3 sold-out baseball games in a row vs. VT is going to be a big strain on parking, even without knowing whether there are other events). I'm in the same boat. Actually heading down with my buddy who is a Hokie alum and has Hokie personalized plates, so we're going to get there early so he can hide his car in with the VT friends and family. :)
Worst case, there is parking by the football stadium and the law school -- but I don't think I've ever had to park that far away. It does get terrible, though, if there's a concert or basketball game, a baseball game, and a lax game all at the same time. The good news is that there are no other home sporting events this weekend except a track meet on Sunday (and that won't really affect parking much). And in looking at the JPJA website, it doesn't look there are any events (but they don't always list everything).
