So did I until I observed a class at my son's Civil Air Patrol Wing


pilot explained how rotary wing aircraft work, including how changing the angles of the blades causes the ship to change direction, elevation, etc.

Simply, each rotor blade is a wing and the motion creates the lift, just like the air flowing over a fixed wing craft. Was pretty interesting stuff.
