College sports are definitely starting to lose me, too


I'd given up on pro sports awhile ago just due to the realization all you are rooting for is laundry. While fans may have a deep-rooted connection to the city or the franchise, the players sure don't.

But I liked that the fans and players had at least some small connection in high school and college sports. In high school, they are your neighbors and your classmates. In college, you at least have the common bond that you both chose to go to that school (you don't generally get to choose your high school or your pro team, but you choose your college). But NIL has turned college sports into pro-like contract negotiations, and the transfer portal is a semblance of free-agency. Absolutely good for the players, but it breaks any bond the fans have to the players.

I will say I kinda enjoy watching the NFL again, but I don't really cheer for any specific team. I just watch to marvel at the skill on display.
