I have good years and bad years in the market

I get money back during the bad years, and I pay during the good ones. Since most of my investments are in mutual funds, I really don't know what I owe until I get my 1099s.

I don't get money back during every bad year. I had a year where the investment house kept buying and selling while my overall value went down, but all of those sales where they made money gave me some large capital gains I had to pay on. I fear this might be one of those "bad" years, since my investments were down significantly the first quarter. If so my net worth will go down, but my tax bill will go up.
